A very old

  • One day, while going crab fishing in a downpour that had lasted for days, Pelayo comes upon a homeless, terrified old guy with giant wings in his yard.
  • The old man speaks in a language that is difficult to comprehend and is filthy and weak. Pelayo and Elisenda conclude that the old guy was an angel who had sought to take their sick child to paradise in an effort to save the child.
  • The neighbor who lives next door to Pelayo begs him to kill the angel with a piece of wood, but as their child recovers, he and Elisenda pardon their guest.
  • The old man residing in their chicken coop draws a lot of interest from curious bystanders.
  • Local priest Father Gonzaga warns the villagers that the elderly man, who appears messy and does not speak Latin, is most likely not an angel. Father Gonzaga makes the decision to consult his bishop as a result.
  • Despite Father Gonzaga's best efforts, pilgrims from all over come to the elderly man's presence and seek his advice and treatment.
  • A woman who had been keeping track of her heartbeats since she was a young child arrived because she was having trouble.
  • Elisenda has to start charging admission since the crowd is so large and boisterous (unmanageable).
  • The elderly man usually ignores the observers' cries and laments, despite their attempts to persuade him to stand up by plucking his feathers and throwing stones at him.
  • He grows outraged, though, when the guests brand him to see whether he's still alive.
  • Father Gonzaga does his utmost to manage the mob as he waits for the Church's verdict on the old man.
  • The crowd starts to leave when a traveling clown performance arrives. The "spider lady" mythology, which describes a woman who, after disobeying her parents, was transformed into a large spider with a human head, is what draws people there.
  • Because of the widespread interest in the terrible tale of the spider woman, people quickly forget the elderly man who had only performed a few pointless semimiracles for his visitors.
  • Pelayo and Elisenda have become extremely wealthy because to the admission fees they imposed.
  • Pelayo quits his job and starts building a new, larger house. The elderly man stays with them in the chicken coop as the youngster becomes older.
  • The elderly man eventually moves into the next shed after the chicken coop collapses, but not before frequently wandering about the home and upsetting Elisenda.
  • The elderly man begins to recuperate just when Pelayo and Elisenda had begun to think that he would soon die.
  • He sings to himself sea chanteys at night, which are tunes sailors sing. Elisenda watches in awe as the old man spreads his wings and flies out into the distance.

Points to remember:

  • Pelayo notices a weathered old guy in his courtyard with huge wings.
  • Elisenda considers charging visitors a fee to see the elderly gentleman in order to generate revenue.
  • The old guy is mistreated and even attacked by the crowd. With a branding iron, he is stabbed and burnt.
  • People are more interested in seeing the Spider Woman, who interacts, than the elderly guy, whose reputation has decreased as a result.
  • Elisenda watches the elderly guy go off into the distance, disappearing into the blue of the sea.
