The Treasure in the forest

- The Treasure in the Forest is a suspenseful tale about the destiny relating the fate of two treasure hunters, Evans and Hooker who murder a Chinese man and steal his treasure map, which locates a buried stash of gold ingots (blocks of several valuable things).
- Evans and Hooker who were heading towards a coral island in the heat of the noon sun, after having paddled all night from the mainland through the sea in a canoe in search of Spanish treasure.
- Hooker is looking at a map of the treasures that the narrator tells they stole from Chang-hi, a Chinese man who they killed while committing the robbery.
- By chance, Chang-hi had found the riches that had been left behind by a shipwreck.
- A Spanish galleon (ship) had been discovered, and he had made the decision to rebury it in a place shown on his map.
- They appear to be very undernourished and quite exhausted. They look at the map and are perplexed by the dashes that are displayed.
- Evans and Hooker locate the location marked on the map, and after beaching their canoe they make their way through the jungle to the interior of the island.
- Evans nods off as Hooker steers the boat, and in his dream he sees a small fire with three Chinese people seated around it.
- They were discussing the Spanish treasure that a Chinese guy named Chang-hi had discovered on an island after being shipwrecked and wished to remove.
- They mercilessly murder the Chinese man Chang-hi and take the treasure map. He grins at them as Chang-hi is killed.
- They paddle their boat toward the coral island. However, neither of them is aware of its purpose.
- Following the map, they eventually come across a forest and a group of stones that match the map exactly.
- However, they also discover a bruised man's body next to the purple and swollen body, which they believe to be Chang-employee hi's who decided to take advantage after seeing the dug pit and some gold.
- The two men begin by loading Evans' jacket with as much gold as they can carry back to the boat, but after traveling about 100 yards Evans' arms begin to hurt, and he eventually passes out. After Evans's collapse, Hooker rearranges the ingots on the jacket and experiences a thorn prick.
- At this point, Hooker finally understands the true significance of Chang-smile.
- Chang-hi had thorns "similar to those the Dyaks poison.
- Hooker started ineffectively sucking his finger.
- His hands, arms, and neck started to hurt.
- His fingers froze in place.
- He saw Chang Hi's joyful face in his dreams.
- He turned to look at Evans before looking up. The trees were brushed by a breeze.
- One of them let go of a large white bloom, which landed in front of him.
- The narrative comes to a conclusion as Hooker lies dying next to his friend's "still twitching" body.
