Neighbours
Neighbours," a short story by Tim Winton, tells the story of a young couple who moves to a new location where they find themselves among a large number of European immigrants.
One of the main themes of this short story is the great quality of life enjoyed by Australia's vast population of immigrants, as well as their peaceful coexistence with the country's native population.
They notice that their new neighbourhood is densely populated with European migrants.
Previously this young couple used to live in expensive area where you could hardly see the neighbors.
It was drastic change for them, as they could the sound of people spitting, washing and watering and they did not imagine that they will be getting this type of shock.
It took a span of 6 month for adapt their environment.
The couple are uncomfortable at first, having to listen to their next-door neighbors' loud conversations, a Macedonian family, and the hammering of their other next-door neighbor, a Polish widower, among other things.
As they became more accustomed to their new surroundings, the young couple begins to adopt a more favorable attitude toward their neighbors, realizing that they are not all horrible people.
Neighbours starts to realise "the young guy" remains at home to complete his thesis on a nineteenth-century novel and the lady used to go for a work.
Gradually, they start to notice the strange and even unpleasant customs of their new neighborhood after a few weeks.
Their new surroundings seem strange and frequently unpleasant, and as a result, both the young couple develops prejudices and dislikes regarding their neighbors.
During the autumn season, the newlyweds began planting a variety of vegetables in their kitchen garden.
Neighbors were able to express their comments on the planting approach because of this kitchen garden.
They learn that they can be friends and help each other in their daily lives, making their entire neighborhood happy and pleased.
The young man's word choice appeared to be purposeful. One of the young woman's neighbors even offered them a bag of garlic cloves to plant.
The young couple eventually erected a henhouse for their brood of chickens.
The henhouse's building had not been done with sufficient care. It had begun to rain early in the day.
However, their long-lost neighbor unexpectedly showed up and rebuilt the henhouse without their permission.
Gradually the young couple grows fond of their new neighbors.
After a period of adjustment, the young couple realizes that the majority of their neighbors were not bad people.
Despite the fact that the couple had not planned for pregnancy any sooner but, it occurs and is detected quickly as they weren't expected.
When a girl knew she was pregnant, her friends and family found out, they surrounded her with gifts and advice.
The young couple was motivated by everyone in the community as they used to talk to them and help them without seeking for help.
The young couple was happy because they were satisfied with their new neighbors.
Whole community's neighbors were happy for them and celebrated their joy with everyone after the birth of their child.
The young man realizes that 20th-century literature had not prepared him for this.
The two have become accustomed to this level of attention, and they are taken aback by the outpouring of love that greets them when the entire neighborhood gathers to celebrate the birth of their new child.
